It is a privilege to be the Principal of Mangonui School. I feel a great sense of responsibility to my community to lead a school that delivers learning that will enable the tamariki of our area to be successful citizens of the future, ‘Nga Rangatira mo Apopo’ – Leaders of Tomorrow!
We want our students to be resilient and proud of who they are and where they come from. They live in a unique part of the world where their kura sits on top of a hill overlooking the Mangonui Harbour. Our learning is about enhancing our connection to the environment that surrounds us. We want our students to have a deep respect and understanding of this world from both a Maori and Non Maori perspective. Through deepening this connection they will gain a stronger insight of themselves and where they fit in this world. We want them to understand the importance of their harbour, rivers, ngahere and understand the challenges that these resources face.
Our children must be able to face these challenges, they need to be able to work together, collaborate and care for each other. They need to be team players and team leaders. They need the skills to cope with the challenges that life will throw at them and know they can find a solution. Our students need to be creative and think out of the square and take pride in standing out from the crowd. Kaitiaki of Self, Others and Papatuanuku.
Our content is directed by the New Zealand Curriculum. It is important that our students are ready for Intermediate by the time they leave Mangonui School. We want to ensure our students are literate, numerate and good citizens. Our learning programmes are thematic ensuring they are purposeful, meaningful, relevant and balanced. We are proud to be part of the Manaiakalani Outreach kaupapa. Our Learning is based around Learn, Create, Share. Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) is a big part of our Term 4 curriculum. Students learn to kayak, surf, paddle board and swim.
We teach through our unique context. Building connections to the people, land, sea and bush of our rohi. We want our children to see the environment as part of their whanau. That they understand the role of kaitiaki.
We have an outstanding team of teachers and support staff at Mangonui School. A creative, intelligent and vibrant team who are passionate about our kura.
Mangonui School has a unique flavour so that learning and life at school is engaging, interesting, kind and fun
